Faculty of Social Sciences, VU University Amsterdam
The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1963 and is one of the largest faculties at the VU University Amsterdam. Some 300 staff members are occupied in education and research. The faculty aims to be a centre of excellent research. It wishes to create a climate that stimulates and supports such research and aims to take part in an international network of prominent faculties of social sciences. This network supports the faculty’s international cooperation in education and research.
Within the Faculty the research group Social Inequality and the Life Course (SILC), headed by Harry Ganzeboom and Aat Liefbroer, is responsible for the Dutch part of the ISSP. The SILC research programme studies the relationships between development in the socio-economic life course and family life and emphasizes the dynamic interplay between social inequality in the socio-economic career and major demographic events in the life course.
